On Death and Bereavement - Talk for 8th Global Conference on Buddhism
Posted by AUTUMN&WINTER on 09-07-2013, 8:09 AM :
Ven. Chodron speaks on how to support our loved ones through the dying process while managing our grief, and how to prepare for our own death. This talk was recorded for the 8th Global Conference on Buddhism organized by the Buddhist Fellowship in Singapore from July 6 to 7, 2013.
After watching this video clip, I'm glad that I'd done correctly when my closed one passed away last year. I'd told my family members don't put me on life support or feeding tube (I understand from the nurse that it's very painful & uncomfortable) even if there's a need.

We can't bring our possessions with us when we are gone but by reciting Nanmo Amituofo, we will be reborn in Western Pureland.

Yeah, but too bad (无奈), we will not recognise each other. I'd just attended 7 days of 水陆法会. I participated in the inner hall chanting. There were so many meaning Buddhist verses which I had not chanted before. Managed to find one at youtube. Just to share with you all.
Mountains have no words but sigh for the passing of people, it's like the dew on the grass and like lightning. Where do these people pass away go to? The mountains remain. Afterall it's just a dream.
(6 realms (heaven, humans, demi-gods, animals, hell & ghost) are afterall not eternal)

Posted by JapLow on 06-06-2013, 2:05 PM :

Repentance in Buddhism is slightly different from other religions. Buddhists repent not just for the unwholesome actions in this life but also repent for the unwholesome actions committed in our many past lives.
Repent sincerely will lighten one's sins.
REPENTANCE VERSE
All evil actions committed by me since time immemorial,
stemming from greed, anger and ignorance,
arising from body, speech and mind,
I deeply repent having committed.

You can bring packets of rice or bee hoon to the temple and place them on the table at the hall of the temple. Temples like Buddhist Lodge 居士林, Kwang Meng San temple, Buddhist Youth Mission at Clementi etc.
It will be good if you can participate in the annual food offering to the monks on 1 Jan of every year at Kwang Meng San Phork Khark See Monastery.
There are many benefits of food offering to the monks and one of them is longevity.
The following video is not very clear but it was the food offering at Kwang Meng San Monastery in 2010. Devotees will queue along the sides with food and about 100 monks will walk past us to accept our offerings. I shall post about this event and details at this website nearer the date. Only once a year.

On Vesak Day, Bathing Buddha Ceremony is one of the activity.
What can we learn by bathing the Buddha?
"We are now bathing all Buddhas, Pure and grand, complete in wisdom and virtues; May sentient beings be cleansed of the five impurities, All attaining Tathagata’s pure Dharmakaya."
To commemorate the Buddha's Birthday, Buddha's disciples usually hold a "Bathing the Buddha" Ceremony by setting up an altar with flower arrangements, placing a statue of Baby Buddha in the center, and making offerings while bathing the Buddha statue with fragrant water to show their great respect.
However, the true way of showing our respect is to purify our mind. By bathing the Buddha outside, it reminds us to cleanse away our worries, defilements, and delusions to reveal our intrinsic Buddha nature and become enlightened. Learning from the Buddha, following his teaching with right thought, right speech and right action, we are creating a Pure Land.

Think nowadays in the western world more and more are beginning to accept that there is some form of life after death. Cause due to medical advances, they are saving more people back from medically dead situation and these people described that they can see themselves being saved, and seeing things in another world. So they are beginning to entertain the idea that beyond the death of physical body, there is a consciousness that continue on, a life beyond life. Think its becoming a former study of sort.

Her descriptions were the same as being described in this sutra, if not, more disgusting and more eerie. She could not have read this sutra as she's a non Buddhist and non Chinese.
