Repentance in Buddhism is slightly different from other religions. Buddhists repent not just for the unwholesome actions in this life but also repent for the unwholesome actions committed in our many past lives.
Repent sincerely will lighten one's sins.
REPENTANCE VERSE
All evil actions committed by me since time immemorial,
stemming from greed, anger and ignorance,
arising from body, speech and mind,
I deeply repent having committed.
往昔所造诸恶业 皆由无始贪嗔痴 从身语意之所生 今对佛前求忏悔
往昔所造诸恶业 皆由无始贪嗔痴 从身语意之所生 一切罪障皆忏悔
往昔所造诸恶业 皆由无始贪嗔痴 从身语意之所生 一切罪根皆忏悔
